Bringing New Life to Learning

"Because learning shouldn’t be about rules and routine, desks or discipline"

Your child’s education should be a joy, not a chore. But when all we’ve ever known is the school system, it’s hard to imagine something other than tests and textbooks.

As parents, this can leave us feeling isolated and unseen - and even in homeschooling, we might find ourselves trying to recreate the rigid structure of the classroom from our kitchen tables.

But you know that something is missing - for you and your child. And I’m here to tell you there is another way.

Hi, I’m Chelsea!

Literacy Specialist & Creator of The Nurture Nook

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been in love with learning and storytelling. I devoured every book on the shelf at primary school, and my favourite time of the day was when my dad would read bedtime stories to me.

I would lose myself in the magical, fantasy worlds. This was my safe place.

I knew - even back then - that I wanted to be a teacher. I was so proud of myself when I graduated with my teaching degree, and I threw myself into my first job, looking after a reception class.

I came into that classroom on the first day of term bursting with ideas. But I quickly realised that teaching wasn’t the storybook dream I’d imagined.

My ideas didn’t always ‘fit’ with how the school was run, and to me it felt that classroom rules were prioritised over creativity.

Burnout

This wasn’t the primary school that I remembered - a place where you could be yourself, and learn at your own pace. What’s more, the workload started piling up.

By my second year, I was beyond exhausted. I was angry at the lack of support for teachers and parents, and left physically broken.

Shockingly, I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. This was my body’s way of saying ‘enough’.

I had no choice but to leave behind the classroom, heartbroken and convinced that teaching wasn’t for me after all.

Motherhood & A New Path

So, I went back to university to study psychology. I loved it - but deep down, my heart wasn’t in it. Around this time I also became a mum, which made me reflect on my teaching experience from a completely different lens.

I realised that I missed it… but I had no idea how I’d cope back in the system that had burnt me out.

Then, I got an invitation out of the blue from a local school: would I like to come onboard to help children with learning outside of the classroom?

I hesitated at first - what even was this job? But it turned out to be everything I was looking for.

That’s when I realised: I don’t have to stop teaching; I just need to change what it looks like.

Learning, Reimagined

That spark eventually became The Nurture Nook, a learning space for children that supports families through the power of storytelling and community.

I’m here to help parents see that learning can (and should!) be fun.

From allotments, to nature trails, and story times, children can now learn in a way that truly nurtures, and parents feel less alone.

Come and explore a different kind of learning with us, at The Nurture Nook.
